Legend of the Five Rings – Bushi League

l5r_logo1-300x1241

Between now and the end of October, we’re going to be running a new format for the Legend of the Five Rings collectible card game (CCG), called Bushi League.  This is a format intended to encourage casual play and to promote getting new players into the game.  Accordingly, the rules for Bushi League are tailored to those ends.  Specifically:

-only Celestial Edition-legal cards are to be used.  Moreover, no Rare or Promotional cards are to be used.  This means that only Commons, Uncommons and Fixed cards from Clan starters can be used in decks.  All other normal, Celestial Edition deck-building rules apply.

-all Bushi League games must be played in the store, using decks constructed as above.

-there will be two categories of player in the League–Established and New players.  Established players are those who have been playing L5R for at least 3 months prior to August 13.  New players are those who have not.  Players must declare, upon their entry into the League, if they wish to be considered an Established player or a New player; note that the Tournament Organizer (TO) has the final say as to which category a given player will be designated.  Each Established player is encouraged to bring at least one New player into the League, because it will benefit the Established player points-wise (see below).  Note that each Established player may bring as many New players into the League as he wishes.  Each New player will be “linked” to an Established player (generally, the one who brought them in!)

-Established players get 1 point for each game they play, and one additional point for each game they win, between August 13 and October 31 inclusive.  New players get points in accordance with the same scheme.  At the end of the League, points scored by New players will be added to the point totals of their “linked” Established players.

-at the end of the League, points will be totaled.  There will be prizes for the Established players with the most Games Played and the Most Games Won, and for the New players with the Most Games Played and the Most Games Won.  Note that if the same player in each category would win both Most Games Played and Most Games Won, then he/she will win Most Games Won and Most Games Played with be passed down to second place.

-there is a one-time $10 entry fee to play in the League, which must be paid to the TO by the end of August.

Questions should be directed to the TO, Dave Laderoute (dave@thunderbay.com)

D&D Game Day – August 21

dnd

A reminder that the official D&D Game Day for August is on Saturday, the 21st.  We will be running a 4th Edition module in the Dark Sun Campaign Setting; this will coincide with the release of the new Dark Sun products for 4th Edition…the Campaign Setting, the Creature Catalog and an adventure module, “Marauders of the Dune Sea“.  The Psionic Power book will also be releasing.  If you’re interested in playing a roughly 3-4 hour, “one-shot” session in the Dark Sun setting, “The Lost Cistern of Aravek”, let us know.  We’re asking folks to sign up for this, so you can email us at dave@thunderbay.com, phone us at (807) 768-8748 or drop by the store and sign-up.  We need to get numbers of players so we know how many DM’s we need; in any case, we can handle a maximum of 18 players, so sign up early!  Start time will be 1:00 p.m.; there’s no cost to play and you don’t need to bring anything besides you and your dice!

For Sale – PAINTED Warhammer Fantasy Armies

warhammer_logo_background1

Yes, we’ve got more painted armies for sale.  This time, it’s Warhammer Fantasy Battles on the block.  With the new starter set, Island of Blood, about to come out, we’re selling off the armies from the old starter, Battle for Skull Pass.  These were assembled and painted as demo armies for the store but, since we’re about to put our new demo armies on the table from Island of Blood, we need to make some space.  So, we’ve got:

-a 600 point Dwarf army, consisting of a Thane (general), a Slayer, a Cannon with crew, one regiment of Warriors, one regiment of Thunderers and one regiment of Miners; and

-a 600 point Goblin army, consisting of a Warboss (general), a Shaman, a Troll, two regiments of Spearmen, one regiment of Archers and one regiment of Spider-Riders.

Each is going for only $50…that’s for a painted and ready-to-play army!  And, as an added extra, we’ll offer $5 off the cost of the Dwarf, or the Orc and Goblin army book, when you buy the corresponding army!  This is your chance to jump into the terrific new 8th Edition of Warhammer Fantasy Battles for just a small investment, and get yourself a beautiful army that can be the core for a might host!  So, come into the store and check them out, or stay tuned and we’ll get some pictures posted in the day or two.

For Sale – PAINTED Flames of War Armies!

FoW

We have two fully-assembled and painted armies for sale, for the fantastic historical miniatures game, Flames of War.  We have a German Fallschirmjager (paratrooper) Company and a U.S. Tank Company; both are nicely-painted and done with full scenic bases (UPDATE – THE GERMAN ARMY HAS BEEN SOLD).  The German company is $225 complete, while the U.S. company is $475 (because it consists of so many more tanks and vehicles).  These prices reflect the retail cost of the models, with a small mark-up for the cost of assembly and painting (well below cost-recovery, so this is quite a deal!)  Individual platoon components of each army are also available individually.  This is an excellent way to quickly get a table-ready army into your hands for this fantastic game.   If you’re interested, come on into the store and check these deals out!

Open!

The store will be open tomorrow – Monday, August 2nd – from 12 noon until 4 PM. For those of you at a loose end, feel free to drop by and keep us company! :)

Come Try ‘Infinite City’ on August 1!

ic-logo

On Sunday, August 1, we’ll be doing demos of the cool city-building/strategy game ‘Infinite City’ from Alderac Entertainment Group.  ‘Infinite City’ is a stand alone tile game where players become the leaders of corporations building an ever-sprawling city, maneuvering to control the largest districts while holding on to the most valuable buildings.   If you play a demo, not only will you receive a 10% discount on the game (on August 1, only), you’ll also get a set of exclusive “promotional” tiles for the game that aren’t available anywhere else (while quantities last).  We’ll be starting around 2:00 p.m. and demo games only take about 30 minutes, so come out and try this cool game from AEG!

We Need DM’s!

darksun

…for Dungeons and Dragons 4th Edition.  The success of our D&D Encounters sessions on Wednesday evenings, in the Dark Sun campaign setting, has left us short; we have more players than we can actually run through game sessions!  Wizards of the Coast rules require a maximum of 6 players per Dungeon Master so, quite simply, we need more DM’s!  If you’re interested in helping out, let us know, either by email to dave@thunderbay.com, by phone to (807) 768-8748, or by dropping by the store.  Please note the following requirements:

-you must be an experienced Dungeon Master;

-you must have a thorough understanding of Dungeons and Dragons 4th Edition rules; and

-you must be available to attend the store on Wednesday nights from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

The payoff?  Not only do you get to have some fun with some great players, but you get discounts on related D&D products.  So, if you’re interested, let us know!

Additionally, we need some DM’s to assist on D&D World Games Day on August 21.  If you can help us with this event (and even if you can ONLY help us with this event), please let us know that, too!

Hordes Primal Mark II

It’s here!

hordes

Hot off the presses – and a very pretty book indeed, with a nice gallery of the models and a “Hobby and Painting Guide” included. I’ll admit a fondness for the Circle Oroboros; werewolves should have slavering jaws, not angsty pouts – and these guys fill the bill. :)

More new games, Lots more fun!

We just had some exciting new arrivals!

First, what do you get if you cross a rail game with a classic Eurogame? Settlers of America!

S_o_A

Now, in order to trade commodities with your other players, you have to arrange delivery. This is a great new stand-alone game from Mayfair- you don’t need any other version to play.

For fun, party games, kids will love Quelf Jr. -

quelfjr

It’s full of silly, interactive fun!
